Which banks are standing out in Cameroon in 2025?
In this ranking of the leading retail banks in Cameroon, one bank clearly stands out claiming the top spot on Quality perception:
#1 Afriland First Bank leads the ranking by a wide margin, with a 71% Quality Score, driven by 73% positive ratings and just 3% negative feedback. We can attribute this strong performance to several key factors. Unlike many top banks in Cameroon that operate as subsidiaries of foreign groups (such as Société Générale, UBA, and Ecobank), Afriland is majority Cameroonian-owned. It is also the country’s largest financial group, ranking first in total assets, customer deposits and loans, and operating an extensive branch network of 80+ locations.
Other leading banks in Cameroon on consumer perception
#2 UBA – United Bank for Africa holds the second position in quality with a strong Quality Score of 51%,far behind market leader Afriland. As a Nigerian bank with a strong pan-African presence across 20 countries, UBA has a smaller branch network in Cameroon (20+ branches) compared to Afriland. Nevertheless, it stands out for its innovative digital banking solutions (offered through AI-powered chat banking, USSD access, mobile apps, and seamless integration with mobile money platforms) and its strategic focus on key urban markets.
#3 Ecobank ranks third in quality with a Quality Score of 47%, driven by 52% of respondents rating it positively and only 6% expressing a negative opinion. Headquartered in Togo, Ecobank is the most widely established banking group in Africa, with a presence in 35 markets across the continent. In 2025, it was named Best Bank in Africa by Global Finance, reinforcing its strong panafrican reputation. The bank has prioritized digitalization as a core pillar of its growth strategy, offering products and services through low-cost-to-serve platforms, enhancing both efficiency and accessibility. This result is consistent with our observations from three years ago, when Ecobank often ranked among the top three banks in Africa, particularly in Francophone markets.
Notably, two of the top three banks (UBA and Ecobank) are relatively recent entrants, having established operations in the 2000s. Yet, they outperform long-established institutions such as Société Générale, BICEC, and SCB, present in the market since as early as the 1950s and 1970s.
