Egyptian mall developer looks to underserved delta region

What will be the largest mall in Egypt’s delta region (located between Cairo and Alexandria) is set to open in the city of Tanta later this year. Developer Marakez already operates two malls in the vicinity of Cairo – Mall of Arabia and Mall of Katameya.
With a gross leasable area of 40,000m², Mall of Tanta will have 140 retail outlets, 30 restaurants, and 1,500 surface parking spaces. According to Ahmed Badrawi, executive vice chairman of Marakez, “Mall of Tanta represents the fulfillment of Marskez’s ambitious strategy to invest in Egypt’s under-served governorates. With almost all foreign investment focused in Cairo and Alexandria, we are extremely pleased to bring a fully-fledged, 21st century shopping and entertainment experience to the five million residents of the Delta region.” “We have recently secured an additional location in Mansoura (another city in the delta region) and hope to expand into other Governorates in the near future,” he added.
Such developments reflect an ongoing shift in retail investment towards second- and even third-tier cities in many parts of Africa, as previously discussed by Charles Ballard, head of retail and real estate at Sagaci Research.
