KFC has arrived in Côte d’Ivoire, opening its first outlet in Abidjan during April. Meanwhile, another subsidiary of Yum! Brands, Pizza Hut, has entered the Tanzanian market, opening a restaurant in Dar Es Salaam.
But not everyone is happy about the spread of fast food in Africa. Speaking to the New York Times newspaper in November 2017, Dr Charles Agyemang, associate professor of public health at the University of Amsterdam, claimed that in his native Ghana, “Eating local foods is frowned upon by some. People see fast food as civilized. This is having a major impact on obesity.”
