Majid Al Futtaim (MAF) has revealed that it will open Uganda’s first two Carrefour stores in spaces formerly occupied by Kenyan retail chain Nakumatt, which departed the local market in 2017. The Dubai-based retailer already operates stores under the Carrefour banner in Egypt and Kenya. Its entry into the Ugandan market follows a pattern established in Nairobi, where a number of the six Carrefour outlets that have opened since 2016 are located in former Nakumatt premises.
The first of these stores will be opened in Oasis Mall later this year, with a second store planned for the Metroplex Mall early next year. These malls, which are both located in the capital Kampala, have a gross leasable area of 7,000m² and 15,500m², respectively, and are rated “B” and “D” in Sagaci Research’s database of African malls.
